The Pink Ladies' Slipper

The backwoods of New Jersey are home to a semi-rare wild orchid, known as the Pink Ladies' Slipper, or Pink Moccasin Flower (Cypripedium acaule). Rare because of the extremely picky soil conditions they require, but when you find one, there are usually many more nearby. It's a strange looking flower, to say the least, but rather interesting as well. A single tall stalk rising from 2 broad leaves at the ground yields a solitary, oddly shaped flower at the top.

The ones I have found have all been in mid to late May. They can't be transplanted, and die quickly if picked. So if you are lucky enough to stumble upon some, leave them be and simply enjoy them where they lie.
